INTRODUCTION
A Cremone bolt (frequently spelled Crémone in French) is a classic, surface-mounted locking mechanism used to secure pairs of casement windows or double doors, such as French doors. Celebrated as the “jewelry” of architectural millwork, it seamlessly blends Old World craftsmanship with heavy-duty utility.
Unlike modern entry locks that are hidden inside the door or window stile, a Cremone bolt is proudly exposed on the surface, making a deliberate, elegant architectural statement.
Unlike modern concealed multi-point locks, a Cremone bolt wears its engineering on its sleeve. The entire mechanism is mounted directly to the surface of the door or window.
- The Gear Box (The Heart): Located at the center of the assembly, usually at waist height. This housing contains a rack-and-pinion or cam mechanism that translates rotational movement into vertical motion.
- The Handle or Knob: The primary touchpoint. Turning this handle 90° or 180° drives the entire system.
- The Rods (The Teeth): Two heavy, solid metal rods extend vertically from the gearbox—one reaching up to the top of the frame, and one reaching down to the floor.
- The Guides: Decorative metal brackets mounted along the frame to keep the long rods perfectly aligned and prevent them from bowing.
- The Strikes (The Keepers): Solid catches mounted at the absolute top and bottom of the opening where the rods securely slide home.
